Nilo’s Story – El Curandero del Pueblo
Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 1858, Nilo became a physician and healer after losing his young sister, Lucía, to scarlet fever. Guided by his medical training, his mother Juvencia’s traditional healing knowledge, and a mysterious dream in which Lucía told him, “Ve a donde están las piedras rojas. Te necesitan,” Nilo followed the red rocks north to Colorado.
In Denver, Nilo devoted his life to caring for those who needed him most. He and his wife, Esperanza, founded Casa Alma, a community medical center where everyone was welcome and no one was turned away even if they could not afford care.
Known as El Curandero del Pueblo, Nilo died of tuberculosis in Denver in 1921, leaving his fortune to Casa Alma so its doors could remain open long after he was gone.
Born in Oaxaca. Called north by the red rocks. Home in Denver.
